F.I.D. – European Prize for Urban Public Space

F.I.D.'s submission to the European Prize for Urban Public Space (CCCB, Barcelona) — the Piața Traian intervention, grounded in the district's real social fabric.

Football as Infrastructure for Democracy was entered for the European Prize for Urban Public Space, organised by CCCB in Barcelona. The dossier presents the intervention in Piața Traian — a historic space with over two centuries of industrial and multicultural tradition that had fallen into neglect.

Against top-down urban regeneration, F.I.D. proposes an approach that starts from the district's real community. Designed by architects, landscape engineers and visual artists — some of them neighbourhood residents — the intervention combined a multifunctional scaffold and a mini football pitch, both serving as a symbolic agora.

The project is rooted in a local tradition of friendly matches between neighbour teams, followed by the "third half" — a moment of conviviality that kept the community alive. The natural grass, unusual in a mineral urban space, opened Piața Traian to multiple scenarios of use.
