Voices of Fabric
A neighbourhood newspaper published by Casa Jakab Toffler, born from Andrei Becheru's residency — 80+ interviews and photographs about how people live and remember the Fabric district.
Part ofSocial Fabric 2023
"Voices of Fabric" is a neighbourhood newspaper dedicated to the affective relationships between residents and the Fabric district. The project grew out of a research-and-creation residency in which artist Andrei Becheru documented, through over eighty interviews and a wide series of photographs, how neighbours live and remember the district. Recurring themes are housing, the built environment, urban nature and, above all, the people behind the walls. The second issue, published in 2023, runs to 36 pages and was printed in 1,500 copies (ISSN 3008-623X).
One of the central stories is that of "Tanti Gabi's" corner shop, a reflection on the social role of the small shop as a space of trust and community. Sport has a special place through "the Traditional" — the Married vs Unmarried match — and the "Football in Traian" tournament. Another important thread is Fabric's ethnic diversity, explored in the report "The Minorities".
The issue also includes artistic interventions in public space, such as the plant "prostheses" for the "Woman with Grape" statue, the Traian Carnival and the "Sound Archive" podcast — a warm and honest portrait of a living district.
