Football in Traian 2022

F.I.D. — "Football as Infrastructure for Democracy" — was a participatory architectural installation conceived as a mini-football pitch in Piața Traian, designed as a platform for socio-cultural interaction for the residents of the Fabric district. A multifunctional scaffold of metal framing and painted OSB panels, together with a natural-grass pitch of roughly 25 x 15 metres, composed a symbolic agora in the service of the community. The concept starts from the idea that football is a "horizontal sport", one that equalises relationships between people and builds trust, fair-play and belonging.

The heart of the project remains the traditional amateur match between the "rival" Married and Unmarried teams, a gathering that has kept alive Fabric's backstreet football tradition since 1936, interrupted only by the Second World War and the pandemic. Beyond the competition, the gathering is a celebration of community: veterans with long careers are honoured, and whole generations reunite to share memories and trade good-humoured "barbs".

The project grew out of winning the open call for site-specific interventions in Piața Traian launched by the BETA 2022 architecture biennale — a 5,000-euro prize funded by the Timiș branch of the Romanian Order of Architects. The installation stood on site between 23 September and 23 October 2022, and the championship ran on 14–16 October. The first day brought the inaugural demonstration match between Married and Unmarried, a game by the Poli juniors and a screening of the documentary "Fair Play Day"; the weekend belonged to the sixteen neighbourhood teams entered. The "Mercur" trophy was won dramatically, on penalties, by Fabric Warriors against Amicii Mămăligari, in a final also attended by the city's mayor.

The project kept travelling beyond the site: a bilingual dossier on F.I.D. and BETA 2022 appeared in the architecture magazine Zeppelin (issue 167), and the work was entered at the Bucharest Architecture Annual 2022, in the research-through-architecture and experiment section.
